How Much Is a 1921 Morgan Dollar Worth in 2026?

1921 Morgan dollar value — 1921 Morgan silver dollar obverse with Liberty profile and 1921 date

One 1921 Morgan dollar reached $240,000. Yours is probably worth little more than its silver. Both of those statements are true, and the distance between them is the whole subject of this page: a proof struck for a presentation set, against a circulation coin struck by the tens of millions. The mint mark on the reverse, the grade, the surfaces, and — at the very top — proof status decide which end of that range your coin sits at. Flip it over, find the mark below the wreath, and this page will tell you where you stand.

Short answer first: most circulated 1921 Morgan dollars are worth a modest premium over their silver — the live metal floor is in the specs section below and moves with the live silver market. Uncirculated examples start around $75+, certified MS63 coins run $110+ to $160+ by mint, gem MS65 coins run $175+ to $875+, and the rare Chapman Proof has reached $240,000. The rest of this page is how to tell which one you have.

The three-mint set — which one do you have?

The 1921 Morgan is the only Morgan ever struck at Denver, and the last Morgan struck for circulation anywhere. Three mints struck it in a single year, and the mint mark is the first thing to check: it sits on the reverse, below the wreath, just above DO in DOLLAR. No mark means Philadelphia, D means Denver, S means San Francisco.

Philadelphia (no mint mark)44,690,000The common one — most 1921 Morgans you will ever see
Denver (D)20,345,000Denver’s only Morgan dollar, ever — the one-year type coin
San Francisco (S)21,695,000Scarce in gem condition, like Denver
Total, all three mints86,730,000No 1921 Morgan is rare in worn condition

Denver is the date to watch. It struck Morgan dollars in 1921 only — never before, never after — which makes the 1921-D a one-year-only type coin in the entire series, and it is scarce in gem condition: an NGC MS65 reached $50,400 at Heritage in June 2024, far above the Philadelphia figure at the same grade. San Francisco is the same story in miniature: common worn, expensive gem.

What a 1921 Morgan is worth by mint and grade

No worn 1921 Morgan will ever be a five-figure coin — the mintages forbid it. What makes individual examples valuable is condition, mint mark, and surface type. The table below is our researched collector estimates from the 1921 Morgan value guide.

Read that table from left to right and the story is plain: a drawer coin is worth its silver plus a small premium, while a never-circulated coin with full lustre can be worth ten to twenty times as much. The Denver and San Francisco columns pull away from Philadelphia as the grade rises — that gap is the whole reason to check the mint mark before anything else.

Why 1921 exists at all

The Morgan dollar was struck from 1878 to 1904 and then stopped. After the First World War, the Pittman Act of 1918 ordered the Mint to replace more than 270 million silver dollars melted to support Britain’s wartime currency — and the Morgan came back for one final year in 1921 at three mints. In the last days of December 1921, the Peace dollar replaced it. That is why the 1921 Morgan feels like two coins at once: the end of a forty-year design, and a one-year emergency restrike made in enormous numbers. It is also why it is America’s most collected large silver coin — everyone has one, and everyone asks what it is worth.

Mirror surfaces and the Chapman Proofs

Beyond mint mark and grade, surface type separates ordinary 1921 Morgans from expensive ones. Coins struck from freshly polished dies show mirror-like fields: Prooflike (PL) means reflective fields with frosted devices, Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) means deeply mirrored fields. In MS63, Prooflike runs $300+ and DMPL $1,100+; in MS65, Prooflike reaches $1,700+ and DMPL $4,700+, with top DMPL examples averaging $8,000+.

At the very top sit the Chapman Proofs, a tiny presentation striking with only about 40 believed struck and around 30 surviving. Their prices belong to a different world: a PR67 Chapman Proof has reached $240,000, and a PR64CAM Cameo example has reached $96,000. If a coin in your collection looks proof-like — razor-sharp, deeply mirrored, frosted devices against mirror fields — treat it as a possible Chapman Proof and get it certified before accepting any offer.

Morgan or Peace? A thirty-second check

The other dollar of 1921 causes the most confusion, so settle it fast. The Morgan shows Liberty facing left in a Phrygian cap with LIBERTY on the headband, and a heraldic eagle in a wreath on the reverse. The Peace dollar shows Liberty in a radiate crown and an eagle on a rock above PEACE. And the mint mark decides it outright: the 1921 Peace dollar was struck only at Philadelphia, so a genuine Peace dollar never carries a mint mark — any 1921 dollar with a D or S is automatically a Morgan. Peace mintage was just 1,006,473 against the Morgan’s 86,730,000, which is why circulated Peace dollars start at $100+ to $200+, reach $900+ to $1,500+ in MS63, and can reach six figures in superb MS67.

Specs and the silver floor

Every 1921 Morgan dollar contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver: it weighs 26.73 grams, measures 38.1 millimetres across, has a reeded edge, and is 90% silver with 10% copper. At the November 2026 silver price near $52.71 an ounce, that metal is worth about $40.77 — the floor under every genuine example, no matter how worn, and the reason no dealer will ever pay face value for one. Designed by George T. Morgan, struck 1878–1904 and again in 1921, the Morgan is the large silver dollar every American collector knows by sight.

Fakes: the weight test first

The 1921 Morgan is one of America’s most faked coins, and the first test is the cheapest: a genuine example weighs 26.73 grams and measures 38.1 millimetres — fakes are often light or the wrong diameter. Silver is not magnetic, so a coin that sticks to a magnet is not silver. Genuine lettering is sharp and even; mushy letters and a pitted surface warn of a fake. A scale, a calliper, and a magnet settle most questions in a minute; anything still in doubt goes to PCGS or NGC.

Your 1921 Morgan dollar questions, answered

How much is a 1921 Morgan silver dollar worth?

Most circulated 1921 Morgan dollars are worth a modest premium over their silver — the live metal floor is in the specs section below and moves with the live silver market. Uncirculated examples start around $75+, MS63 coins run $110+ to $160+, MS65 coins run $175+ to $875+ by mint, and the Chapman Proof has reached $240,000.

How do I tell a 1921 Morgan dollar from a 1921 Peace dollar?

Look at Liberty: the Morgan shows Liberty facing left in a Phrygian cap with LIBERTY on the headband, and a heraldic eagle in a wreath on the reverse. The Peace dollar shows Liberty in a radiate crown and an eagle on a rock above PEACE. Any 1921 dollar with a D or S mint mark is a Morgan, since Peace dollars were struck only at Philadelphia.

What makes the 1921-D Morgan dollar special?

Denver struck Morgan dollars in 1921 only — never before, never after — making the 1921-D a one-year-only type coin in the entire series. It is also scarce in gem condition: an NGC MS65 reached $50,400 at Heritage in June 2024, far above the Philadelphia figure at the same grade.

What is a Chapman Proof?

A Chapman Proof is a tiny presentation striking of the 1921 Morgan, with only about 40 believed struck and around 30 surviving. A PR67 example has reached $240,000, and a PR64CAM Cameo has reached $96,000. A proof-like 1921 Morgan with razor-sharp, deeply mirrored surfaces should be certified before any offer is accepted.

Is a 1921 Peace dollar worth more than a Morgan dollar?

Yes, typically. Only 1,006,473 Peace dollars were struck in 1921, all at Philadelphia in late December, against 86,730,000 Morgans. Circulated Peace dollars bring $100+ to $200+, MS63 examples reach $900+ to $1,500+, and superb MS67 examples can reach six figures — well above the Morgan curve at every grade.

Should I get my 1921 Morgan graded?

For most circulated 1921 Morgans, grading is not worth the fee — the coin is worth little more than its silver. Grade it when it looks uncirculated with full lustre, is a Denver or San Francisco gem, shows Prooflike or DMPL surfaces, may be a Chapman Proof, or is worth $200+ and needs buyer trust. Certification also settles the Morgan-versus-Peace question permanently.
